Press Release

Avonmore summer fair tomorrow

The whole community in West Kensington is coming out in force to support Avonmore Primary School's annual summer fair tomorrow (July 9).

There will be music from local bands, theatre and dance from Covent Garden street performers, story telling, a bouncy castle, and a sponge the teacher stall at the event in Avonmore Road and Marcus Garvey Park between 12 noon and 3pm.

Local businesses and groups including Every Nation Church, North End News, Tesco and the Cumberland Arms,  have supported the event which has been organised by the school parents and teachers' association. There will also be a street market with stalls from local shops and parents, a barbecue, police dogs with their handlers, and a fire engine and its crew.

Organiser Melanie Carlebach said: "We're very excited. It's the major fundraising event of the year and it is a real community effort. We are using the park as well so it is a big event and hope everyone will come and enjoy!"

The fair will be officially opened by the Mayor of H&F Council, Cllr Frances Stainton. The Mayor of  Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Cllr Julie Mills, will also be attending.

So You Want to Make a Donation...

Good afternoon Everyone,

Some parents have expressed an interest in donating their money for the Indian Dance to FOA.

Here has been our response:

All funds for the Indian Dance were for the Gardens of Avonmore--we will return all the funds, but encourage all parents to make a donation to the school directly for any gardening projects.

Remember, this was never a fundraising event for the Friends of Avonmore, but a community-building event intended to give financial support to the school's gardens.

I hope this clarifies the matter.

Updates!

1.  Indian Dance:  Melanie and I are writing to let you know that because of a incredibly low response to the Avonmore Does India event we must cancel it.

As we mentioned earlier this month, we needed to sell a minimum of 30 tickets as of this week so we could honour our obligations for the preparation of the event.

For those of you who did purchase tickets we sincerely appreciate your commitment to the Friends of Avonmore.  You will be able to collect your money Monday, at the front desk with Kerry, after 1pm.

We are very disappointed that we find that lack of interest in an event has forced us to cancel before we incur financial costs after we have dedicated so many hours of our personal time.

Because of the very limited resources of the Friends of Avonmore, we will not be able to make any financial contribution to the Gardens of Avonmore.

2.  Fundraising:  Today we were asked for a donation to the Year 6 year-end gift. Unfortunately, we have had a very difficult time recruiting volunteers to assist with our three fundraising events; we do not have the funds to contribute to this programme.

3.  Summer Fair:  We sincerely hope that all the folks who signed up to help will honour that commitment.

We need your help in the preparation of the event.  This requires your attendance at our planning meetings and monthly FOA Meetings.

We sincerely hope that we can count on you for the summer fair before we find ourselves in the same position again.

4.  Without your help, interest and involvement, the Friends of Avonmore won't work.

Melanie and I intended to revive the Friends of Avonmore with your support.  It is grossly unrealistic to expect that only the two of us can continue with the Summer Fair preparations, or indeed the Friends of Avonmore.

Kind regards,

Melina & Melanie

Tesco Delivers!

Our local Tesco Express and Geoff the Manager, are due a HUGE thank you from all of us!
Last month Melanie and I hand delivered our request for many of the goods we enjoyed today.  Geoff was immediate in his positive response and yesterday we collected all the orange juice, clotted cream, milk, butter, tea, strawberries and chocolates we enjoyed today.  In addition, Roula made a request to the large Tesco in Warwick and they provided a £40 gift card which allowed us to buy flowers, jam and more fresh fruit.  Please, the next time you're in Tesco give a shout out to Geoff for his wonderful community spirit!

The grand scale of this event would not have been possible without all of us joining together to give our kids a memorable day.

Tea Party is Tomorrow...and I've Made Scones

I turned to my new cookery book, Baking Made Easy, and with my third attempt at her scones, I have found aa flaky, buttery heaven.  I am sure that the primary school kids will take a moment to pause and reflect on how delicious the food is.  LOL.  See you all tomorrrow.

Increasing Our Sphere of Friends

Good Afternoon!

I'll never really know how many people are reading this blog--but I will assume it is in the 100s of interested parents, students, staff and local residents!

This morning Melanie and I met with Katie from The Doorstep Library.  This is a new charity in the Hammersmith Fulham area--and whilst their charity number may be new, their programme has been up and running for over 3 years.

In a nutshell, they bring the fantastic world of books to children!  Through their fantastic group of volunteers, they have reached children with their storytelling.  They quite literally, bring books to the child's doorstep.

We are hopeful that we can find many ways to collaborate over the years.  Our first meeting provided an opportunity for us to learn about one another, brainstorm and share contact information--creating links within our  respective circles can lead to many dynamic opportunities.

Melanie and I are quite hopeful that our first endeavour will be great for the students of Avonmore; The Doorstep Library will host a "Storytime Tent" at our annual summer fair. This will provide a wonderful space for children and parents to sit and explore the world through words.  It will also help to get the word out about The Doorstep Library and their wonderful works.

As always, we'll keep you posted!

Bouncy Castles Booked for the 09 July 2011 Summer Fair

It isn't a summer fair without bouncy castles for the kids.  This year we will have two fabulous castles; one castle will be for the under-five crowd (you know how rowdy they can be) and the other castle will be for the older kids.  How much older?  Well, it can even handle the over 18 crowd!  Yes!  We adults will have access to a bouncy castle too!

So start saving your pennies and plan on spending a fantastic day at Marcus Garvey Park and the W14 for all sorts of fun!

Thanks to Andy for providing another year of excellent customer service!

Minutes of the March FOA Meeting

Good Afternoon,

Thanks to all the parents who attended this morning's meeting.

1. CONFIDENTIAL
2.  Class Representatives:
A.  You were asked to attend the class sharing assembly, introduce themselves to parents, provide any leaflets or flyers and make any necessary announcements.  If you are a Class Rep and are unable to attend the sharing assembly, please let Melanie and I know as soon as possible so we can make arrangements to fill-in for you.  Melanie and I will provide all the necessary flyers for you to distribute before the assembly.  It is best to put the flyer on every seat and then the parents can read it when they leave the event.  ALSO, be sure to collect any flyers after the assembly and return them to us--we will re-use those flyers at the next assembly.

B.  Communication:  Remember, you are a great ambassador to the FOA.  Chat up what we do, encourage parents to join us and recruit for our upcoming events.

C.  First Friday Fundraiser: Beginning in May, we will continue to build on our Friday Fundraiser--sometimes ice cream, sometimes fruit, sometimes a morning coffee.  It is a small fundraising event and a great opportunity for us to fine-tune our selling skills before the summer fair!  We learnt that  just two parents doing an ice cream sale does not work!  We definitely need 4 parents to ensure that all the kids get their fair share.  So, save the date of the FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH and help out from 3-4pm.

3.  Tea Party:  You will all be getting reminders on 8 April of what to make for this event.  Earl will be out of town--WE NEED PARENTS TO HELP SET UP AND CLEAN UP ON THE DAY!  Let me know.
We are still waiting to hear exactly how many of the products Tesco will supply.  Kudos to Roula for collecting £40 of vouchers from the Warwick Tesco!
Remember, the Mayor will be there--so let's have a great turn-out for the press!

4.  Avonmore Does India:  If you signed up to help with this event but haven't contacted me, please do so.  We must sell a minimum of 50 tickets to make this a successful furndraiser.  The money we raise is for new plants and equipment for our student's gardens throughout the school.  Please help us sell tickets to this event!  Invite your friends and family.  A ticket is only £10 and includes the show, catered dinner, drinks and entry into the raffle for a door prize.
Prizes are: Pashmina, dinner for two people, a dance lesson.
That is a HUGE bargain of an evening!

5.  SUMMER FAIR:  Yes, we have a plan, reservations on bouncy castles and we need to get some sponsors!  This year's event will be quite different from previous years.  Please attend a meeting to learn about everything we are offering!  Melanie and I simply cannot do it on our own. We have one party committed to the "Strawberry and Cream" stand and to selling "photograph frames" and we have the bouncy castles reserved and one parent from Reception is in a band--and will be performing.  Please email me and tell me exactly what you want to do for the summer fair.

6.  BARONS COURT LIBRARY:  We had some questions regarding this hot topic.  I have emailed the Board of Governors with our interest in having the library as part of Avonmore School.  I have emailed the Councillor for Avonmore--who is also a parent of a Reception year student--Councillor Joe Carlebach.  I am every hopeful that Avonmore will get the library space and we can move forward with accessing a great space for our students.

7.  LONG-TERM Goals of FOA:  This question was asked of Melanie and I, "What are the long-term goals of FOA?"  We want to increase our fundraising so that we can offer a greater selection of in-school and/or afterschool programmes to our students.  That is a broad statement--and we need the input of all of you, the staff and the board of governors to make it happen.

Both the Chair of the Board of Governors and Councillor Joe Carlebach welcome your comments!  Here are their email addresses:

Stephen Bucheron, Chair, Board of Governors:  sbashorun@msn.com
Councillor Joe Carlebach, LBHF: joe.carlebach@lbhf.gov.uk
